Citronella oil is a fantastic way of keeping the bugs at bay. You can buy it in candle, incense and even soap form. This method is less effective in windy areas as it is odor based, but can be a great first defence against being bitten. Avoid using such substances on small children as it can cause mild skin irritation.
Light Traps, Suction Traps and Bug Zappers can prove very effective against mosquitoes. They are highly affected by wind direction however, which means you have to position them carefully to ensure maximum efficiency. You could try and use tactical repellant placement to guide them towards the traps.
Chemically Produced Repellants
Chemical repellants can be some of the most potent forms of protection. They come in aerosols, creams, liquids and sticks and can be found in most pharmacies and grocery stores. The main active ingredient in all these formulas is DEET (N-Diethyl-3-Methylbenzamide) that repels but does not kill mosquitoes.
These are mainly for use on your skin, but you can use products containing Permethrin on camping gear, clothes and bed nets to repel and even kill mosquitoes. Your gear will retain this chemical even when in contact with water which is great for long trips. Don’t get this on your skin however, as it can cause irritation.
Removing Stagnant Water
Stopping Mosquitoes breeding can be one of the biggest defences against them. They need stagnant water to lay their larvae and complete their life cycle, which is why removing it will help quell their numbers. Stagnant water can collect in buckets, tyres, gutters and bird feeders, so make sure you check all these and empty it. As well as this, introducing minnows (small fish) into your pond will deplete numbers of larvae.
The mosquito problem can be almost completely avoided using these steps, but it is important to not go too far with them. Applying repellents with a high concentration can irritate the skin and cause damage. Any broken skin or wounds should be heavily avoided when applying repellent. If you receive any adverse effects from using these methods, consult your doctor.
