To help beat dandruff use shampoo containing the antifungal mineral selenium (check the ingredients panel on the back of the bottle). After conditioning, rinse scalp with a (cooled) strong tea made with fresh thyme. Once a week massage into the scalp a spoonful of coconut oil with 3 drops each of tea tree and rosemary oil. Leave overnight.

Usually due to heightened nervous system activity, calm nerves by taking herbs such as passionflower, kava, zizyphus, magnolia and St. John’s wort. Learn to belly breathe, as diaphragmatic (or belly breathing) switches on the relaxing nervous system.

Increase pre and probiotic foods in your diet including fermented sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and unpasteurised miso. Eat more slowly, chewing each mouthful thoroughly before swallowing. Drink a cup of warm water with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before meals.

Halitosis or bad breath may be due to post nasal drip, where mucus drains from the sinuses and drips down the back of the throat. Use a saline nasal irrigation each morning and take a supplement containing vitamin C, garlic, golden seal, eyebright and zinc.

If you want to tackle fungal infections ban sugar from your diet. Fungi like sugar even more than you do. Apply tea tree oil direct to fungal toenails and skin, using milder tea tree lotion for more sensitive parts. A few minutes of sunshine and seawater also works wonders.

Cold sores

Ease the pain of cold sores by applying a cooled used tea bag to the area. Dry the blisters by dabbing on diluted apple cider vinegar (half vinegar, half water). Take vitamin C, zinc and Echinacea to help prevent future outbreaks.

Take a probiotic supplement containing one or more of the following bacteria, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus reuteri, or Saccharomyces boulardii. Grate an apple, including the skin, allow to turn brown, eat. Drink water with a pinch of Celtic salt and honey to rehydrate.

If the usual triad of more water, more fibre and more exercise don’t do the trick, it may be that your bowel wall is ‘holding on’ and the muscle that lines the bowel needs to relax and let go. Magnesium is an excellent muscle relaxer. Take at least 400mg magnesium twice daily.
